Checkpoint Charlie on Bryan & Fitzhugh
I don’t normally post stuff about anything outside Deep Ellum, but I was having lunch at Jimmy’s and saw the coppers in full-farce.
There are probably fifteen or so police, mostly constables and they are checking everyone’s gestapo paperwork, insurance and I saw one scanning the bar code on a inspection sticker. So those of you with less-than-legal cars you’re warned. The checkpoint runs up Fitzhugh and the tow trucks are taking people’s uninsured rides in the lot across from Jimmy’s.
I wish the police could spend six months dick-ass broke so they could see what impact they are having on people’s lives. I know, I know… just following orders.

ALISA VALDES-RODRIGUEZ BOOK SIGNING
DATE: TUESDAY, 8/12/2008
TIME: 6PM.
LOCATION: EXCUSES EXTREME CAFÉ
ADDRESS: 3025 MAIN ST. DALLAS, TX. 75226
Please join the Dallas Book Club Party for a book signing, and reading from Dirty Girls on Top with Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez.
In 2005 Time Magazine dubbed Valdes-Rodriguez “The Godmother of Chica Lit” and named her one of the 25 most influential Hispanics in the United States. Hispanic Business Magazine has twice named her among the 100 Most Influential Hispanics in America.
Book Club History:
Hello! My name is Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez. Last year I gave a copy of my teen novel HATERS to one woman. She was born in Mexico, she had never read one novel in her life, and did not understand why anyone would ever want to read. Still, because I’d given it to her, she read it. And she loved it. And through her network of family, and friends (most of who had never read a novel before), she ended up selling about 50 copies of the book for me. I started getting text messages from her young relatives across the country.
That’s how it is for me, with many of my readers. My books are sold through networks of friends and family, women telling other women about the books. My first novel sold half a million copies this way, and is widely credited with creating a whole new genre in the US publishing industry, called “chica-lit” – which is to say: novels about fabulous, interesting and complex professional women in the United States, who just happen to be Latinas, written in English, the language 94 percent of Us born Latinos speak and read. Hard to believe such an idea was revolutionary just five years ago, but it was.
Since then, I’ve learned that many of my readers want more than to just read a novel; they want to connect with a community of women like themselves. I’ve learned that in much of the Latino world, personal relationships are often the basis of most professional ones. In other words, I have discovered that my readers want to be friends with me, with each other. They want community. That is never going to be achieved with an advertisement in the New Yorker, or even with a great review in Kirkus, or a feature in The New York Times. This will be achieved through networks of caring, interesting women coming together to talk about books.
